Java, Indonesia

The last port in Indonesia was Semarang on the island of Java where I went to the incredible temple of Borobudur.  A 3 hour drive each way, made for a long day, but this was something not to be missed.  Borobudur dates back to the early 8th century AD and is the world’s largest Buddhist stupa. It was fun climbing to the top of it – great views from up there.

Ancient stories are carved into the stone.

Each of these domes contains a Buda.  A few of the tops have been removed to reveal the surprise within.

As in Bali, there were rice paddies everywhere in various states of the life-cycle (planting, harvesting, resting field).  However, as a mostly Muslim island, Java looked so different.  Mosques replaced the many temples found on Bali and gone were the offerings everywhere.  It was amazing to me how different the island looked without the Hindu influence.

Next up will be three stops in Malaysia.
